Parents, administrators, teachers, and students who are considering school counseling want to know what the school counselor does every day. Why do we still need a school counselor? School counselor participates in character education everyday, prevents violence, carries out career planning, etc.
This part of the ASCA website contains a wealth of information on the role of school counselors, how to become a school counselor, promotion of school counseling programs, and the effectiveness of school counseling.
These materials can be used for night returning to school, teacher's meeting, board of education meetings, one-on-one meeting, or other information that you want to share roles and expertise with others.
ASCA recommends a ratio of students to school counselors of 250: 1, but the national average of 2015-2016 academic year (latest year the data is available) is actually 464: 1. Understand how the states overlap (in alphabetical order, or from the state with the lowest ratio and the highest ratio)
