Founded in 1974, AIOU is the second open university in the world, the first open university in Asia and Africa. Therefore, that talked about the vision of policy makers at the time. Due to AIOU 's proof over the past few years, distance education has brought new opportunities to millions of people, especially women, greatly complemented the efforts of the federal and provincial governments and has not burdened their resources. Due to poverty and the relative poverty of women, the concept of distance education is more relevant and accepted in Pakistan. In the poor Pakistan sector, the literacy rate, dropout rate, and excess education rate are much lower. The incidence of poverty in rural areas is much higher and formal education in rural areas is less mature. For poor and conservative traditions, especially in rural areas, Pakistani women have far lower literacy rates and education rates. Many conservative parents do not allow their daughters to go to school under the pressure of old age. Therefore, AIOU offers educational opportunities to these family girls through its distance learning system.
Allama Iqbal Open University was founded in accordance with Act No. XXXIX passed by Pakistan Parliament in May 1974. Originally named People's Open University, it was renamed Allama Iqbal Open University in 1977 before the centenary of the National Poet and Philosopher Allama Muhammad Iqbal.
