St. Mary 's College, Maryland has been appointed to Maryland Honors College, acknowledging the quality of our students, faculty and programs. As with special private universities, St. Mary's University offers undergraduate courses, liberal arts education, and experience at small universities. There are about 2,000 students on campus, located in the St Mary River in the center of the Chesapeake area, about 70 miles from Washington DC.

In 1992, the Maryland State Council designated this public co-educational institution as a state university. More than 98% of the teachers have doctorates. Or another final degree and the current 11 teachers have won the Fulbright Award. Professors are very active in research and writing, but teachers' main concern and main focus is teaching. The university is home to the Zeta branch of Phi Beta Kappa.
Thanks to small classes, enthusiastic teachers, and informal atmosphere, teachers and students can share university intellectual life inside and outside the classroom. The professor serves as academic advisor, participates in extracurricular activities with students, makes students participate in research, and leads them to individual projects.
More than 50% of Saint Mary 's graduates continue to graduate. St. Mary 's graduates are successful in all disciplines and creative pursuits. When Maryland investigated graduates who graduated from public universities and universities, St. Mary 's graduates consistently expressed greater satisfaction in their education than graduates from other universities.
In 1840, according to the instructions of the Maryland State Council, a non religious St. Mary theological school was founded in St Marys. This is a state authorized university in St. Mary's University of Maryland. The US Naval Academy School was founded in Annapolis in 1845, the Maryland Agricultural University was established in 1856 and eventually grew to the University of Maryland. Since the abolition of the anti-Catholic law in the early 1930s, the population of the Catholic has recovered sharply. Moved by Irish Great Potato Famine (1845-49), many of Irish Catholic immigrants began resurrecting Maryland Catholics and continued until the first half of the 20th century. Immigrants in Italy and Polish immigrants complement Maryland Catholics as well. For the most part, Baltimore was the third largest entrance for European immigrants in the eastern coastal region.
