Since the colonial period, Catholics and Jews were always small communities, but large immigrants from the 19th century to the early 20th century brought new Catholics and Jews to the United States. For the first time in history, Anglo-Protestant Americans are given new racial and religious diversity and it is a challenge to assess the true meaning of American commitment to freedom of religion. America was always an immigrant country, but the largest immigrant wave did not begin until the 1920s.
