The short story "A Handful of Dates" by Tayeb Salih uses various themes and literary techniques to tell the story of an innocent little boy who discovered the difficulties of life. The story begins with three introductory sentences, including background information about the boy who receives the story from grandfather and reader. These sentences indicate that the boy is young, innocent, highly intellectual and has great passion for nature. His grandfather was a mighty man, tall and bearded, and it was said that the reader was beautiful and soft. Then the story moved to Masood, the neighbor who inherited most of the land from his father, but due to the excessive number of his wife, they were forced to sell the land gradually to the boy's grandfather . The narrative action describes the harvest date of the Masood date field, where different characters appear in town, help them work hard, and eat a few dates. When the harvest was completed, my grandfather and the other four separated the products and took their share. This caused the boy to feel sick, he ran into the forest and threw away the day he ate. Salih uses various literary methods and various themes to explain innocent loss
