In India, an estimated 16,000 farmers commit suicide each year, and the mortality rate is much higher than the general population. This article outlines most of the literature on factors related to this crisis.
Literature search was done from multiple Ovid databases, as well as earlier searches from Google, Google Scholar, PubMed. This article outlines the main results.
Social and economic factors, not mental health problems, are related to farmer suicide, increasing debt plays a leading role. According to existing studies, this shows that the agricultural crisis has recently occurred as a result of affecting the most vulnerable farmers. There are many symptoms such as the lack of agricultural investment and irrigation, the use of cash crops, the use of non-institutional sources of credit, the decrease of trade barriers, etc. are seen. It is unlikely that Bt cotton will be an important factor and it has not been shown that a major burden is placed on mental health problems in research reports.
Debt and many of the factors related to it are clearly identified as the most important risk factors. In order to understand the situation further, a larger scale evaluation is necessary.
For this reason, the growing suicide rate in Indian farmers has become popular recently. In an article I read in the class "Center of People's Human Rights and Global Fairness every 30 minutes: suicide of farmers, human rights and land crisis", it is "There is official data only in 2009, the most recent year , 17,638 Farmer suicide - this is a farmer every 30 minutes. "Suicide is such a tendency that it is shocking and impossible. It is every 30 minutes. It is incredible to accept the truth. But why did Indian farmers commit suicide? This campaign has caused our reporters to question our lives, food, health and equal human rights. Some say that this is due to the fact that the technology is very advanced and the yield of crops is reduced, others there are others who say it is not so.
Farmer's suicide is a global phenomenon. Outside India, research in Sri Lanka, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia shows that agriculture is a high stress industry with a higher suicide rate than the general population. This is especially true for small farmers and economically difficult times. Likewise, after reviewing 52 academic publications, Fraser et al. Concluded that the industry had the highest suicide rate in the UK, Europe, Australia, Canada, and the USA, and in the agriculture The risk of mental health problems is higher. Their review argues that there are many reasons behind suicide by farmers around the world, including mental health problems, physical environment, family problems, economic pressure and uncertainty. In developed countries such as the United Kingdom and the United States, the suicide rate of the farmers is considerably higher than the suicide rate of the general population.
