In Kate Chopin novel The Awakening, groups of people can live in some way according to social expectations. This society is located south of New Orleans, Louisiana. The protagonist of the novel is Edna Pontellier. He has two very good girlfriends: Mademoiselle Reisz and Adele Ratignolle. These two women played an important role in the life of Edna, and the roles of the three of them varied widely. In this article we compare the roles of three women and society.
Adele Ratignolle is Edna's best friend and represents the ideal of a Victorian woman. She is what every woman in society likes, she puts her husband and children first, and focuses her life on housework with her family. Meanwhile, another friend of Edna, Mademoiselle Reisz, is the opposite of Adele. She is not married, she has no children, she is sending her own life for herself. She is pouring her time into passion and has little interaction with society. It is music. Mademoiselle Reisz played the largest role in Edna's awakening as Edna praised her life and she decided to live that way like that
At the beginning of the novel, Edna is a person adapting to society, but she is not satisfied with it. Her dissatisfaction and the influence from Mr. Reisz ultimately brought her independence. She is not satisfied with her married life, she does not do much to her children. In fact, when she decides to escape from the expectations of society and decide to become independent, she allows her children to live with their grandmother who has an affair for themselves and lives for themselves I will do. Edna's approach to independence is wrong. She does this in a selfish manner, gives up her husband and children, and protects us from most societies. She has only one thing: her own happiness and desire. Edna finally got what she wanted, but she was still dissatisfied with her life and committed suicide.
The three main female characters of this novel performed well in their own way. Adele Ratignolle sent the perfect life she was looking forward to and she was very happy with it. Mademoiselle Reisz was living the life she wanted but never minded her expectations. Most importantly, despite the selfish and unacceptable behavior of Edna Pontellier, she should remove some of her unsatisfactory lifestyle and receive some honor in going out alone. Three women have very strong personality.
