Youth, Confidence, and a Job

Ray Carver's "fat" is very similar to Hemingway's "clean and bright place", sometimes thought to be "fix" of the story of Hemingway (Oard n.pg.). In the restaurant / bar, both roles cause some confusion for the workers in the facility. The only true difference between the two is that in "obesity" it is meant that the referring person is a person with morbid obesity who orders a large amount of food, but in "clean and bright places" the letters are rich drunkard is. Who wants more wine.

The bar represents a place for young people. There is music in the bar, not very clean. The age is also a symbol. Young people mean a controlled life: "You are young, confident and doing work, older waiters say, you have everything" (143). Symbolically, alcohol means to avoid people's problems.
