Sculpture is an important process among book illustrations. In the 19th century, the steel sculpture was replaced by a block of hardwood carved gradually and then it could be fixed directly to the metal chase of the metal type. In famous wood carvings there are Thomas Bewick (1753-1828), George (1815-1902), Edward (1817-1905) Dargiel. They are working on illustration of the biggest Victorian book in the UK.
Until the middle of the 19th century, sculpture (also known as copperplate engraving or line carving) has been widespread as a way of copying art images on paper and illustrations of books and magazines. Since then, it has almost completely been replaced by etching and other techniques. When the drawing line is cut from copper, the board is inked. Then wipe the surface clean and leave only the incision containing the ink. The plate is then placed in a press with a piece of paper. The paper receives the impression of ink from the groove and completes printing
Engraving is a process that requires cutting a design on a sheet made of relatively hard material. This is an ancient technology that requires extensive skills and experience. The finished board is usually covered with ink, after which the ink is removed from all unetched parts of the board. The sheet is then pressed into paper under considerable pressure. As a result, it becomes a design that is slightly swollen up on the surface of the paper and covered with ink. Because of the cost of process and expertise required, many consumers choose thermal printing, but this is a way to produce similar raised printing surfaces, but in a different way at a lower cost.
