Writing Effective Letters to the Editor

Letters to editors will effectively influence public opinion and legislators' views. The "Editor's Letter" section is one of the most widely read parts of most newspapers and offers the opportunity to reach a wide audience. Letters to editors can provide readers with information and insight about the issues they may not know well and can motivate readers to take action as well

Please shorten - Please do not exceed 250 characters. Just talk about a single question with a letter. Many newspapers edit letters. Keeping your letters short will help to ensure that the newspaper does not edit important ideas

Achieving the goal - Start with an attractive introduction. Please follow a brief introduction of a concise fact. Do not speak wide sentences, you can not support it with the fact. Connect it to your home - newspaper readers care about how the problem affects them or their families. Easy information including economic or other impact on community problems will appeal to readers

End with a call to call action - Ask readers to follow up, including participating in policy makers' calls to solve the problem

Timely - Try to send the message at the most effective time. For example, when legislators consider this issue, letters that support or oppose legislation have the greatest impact.

Become an expert - letters should be properly typed or handwritten and should follow the rules for posting of specific newspapers. Words should be polite, but persuasive
