World War II: The Duties of Women

When people think of the role of women during World War II, they immediately imagine the famous "Rosie the Riveter" poster with a scarf on her head and showing her muscles maybe. This poster undoubtedly symbolizes the role of women in wartime, but it represents women working in the factory while men are fighting. Therefore, it is possible that many people erroneously ignore the large number of women serving in the military. These women are not allowed to fight in battle, but serve women's departments such as women who are receiving volunteer emergency services (WAVES).

In the 1940's, women got more and more work as men left overseas to participate in World War II. In fact, World War II can be regarded as the main trigger of the second wave of the feminist movement that took place after the war. During the war, trade unions, developed in the 1930s, became more powerful, especially as women became more employed and work needed to build support for warfare, in particular. In the 1940s, women were given new career allowances such as maternity leave, day care and counseling. In Europe, many of the countries suffer from war and most of the male population is decreasing, so these benefits are even higher. Nevertheless, in the United States, women are participating in the work force of World War II and after war many women feel that they should enjoy the same rights as men in their work .
