One doctoral student in every two people will experience psychological distress; one in three is at risk of common mental illness

The prevalence of mental health problems of doctoral students is higher than that of general population with higher education, highly educated employees and higher educated students.

Research policy observers are increasingly concerned about the potential impact of current academic working conditions on mental health, especially for doctoral students. Current research objectives have three aspects. First, the prevalence of mental health problems was assessed in student samples of typical PhD studies in Flanders, Belgium (N = 3659). This estimate is considerably higher than the estimate obtained in the control group. Organizational policies are closely related to the universality of mental health problems. Especially work-home interfaces, job requirements and job management, supervisory instruction style, team's decision-making culture and perception of careers outside academic circles are related to mental health problems

Doctoral students face the same challenges as other researchers and higher education personnel.
