In this article we will explore the determinants of women's autonomy in developing countries. In particular, we investigated the relative contribution of income and unrealized income in female autonomy and husband's increase in employment outside the farm. A simple theoretical model has proved that women's empowerment may be more important than income earning income earned. Using data from rural villages in Bangladesh, empirical estimates confirm this prediction and reveal the amazing fact that it is not employment itself but employment outside her husband farm contributes to women's autonomy . The data also shows the importance of choosing the right threat point in the theoretical analysis of female autonomy.
