During Frederick Douglas most of the slaves in the United States were taught or written. Their owners will not allow it, and in some places it is illegal. To be able to read is that there is a high possibility that slaves will escape freedom and live independently in their lives. Douglas very clearly sees that literacy and education means liberty, as the surrounding whites do.
When young Douglas lived with a woman named Alder Mrs. She was very kind to him for the first time and began to teach him how to read. She has never had slaves before, and most white slave owners do not know that they believe that slaves should be treated cruelly. But when Mr. Old discovered, he said that you can not teach you to read slaves because he will complain to Mrs Old as slave as a slave.
This situation began to be Douglas's desire to be readable and writable and to become a freelancer. Furthermore, it is because of his cultural literacy ability that he can become an influential spokesperson to abolish the death penalty.
When Douglas was a child of Baltimore, his mistress Sofia Old started to teach him to read. When her husband noticed, he asked her to stop soon, because in his heart the literacy ability will destroy the slave. Being able to read means to become a slave. It was this moment that Douglas understood the importance of literacy ability to win his freedom. He realized that literacy was the key to release from slavery.
Illiteracy has allowed Douglas to read the debate over slavery and release his ideas from the grounds of slavery he heard frequently around him. By reading, he could better formulate the argument against slavery. In addition, the literacy ability has practical functions because it allows Douglas to search for jobs in the north after escaping from slavery. Literacy skills made it harder for him to seek avoidance as he was reassured that he could find a job for literate people when he was thinking about escape.
Douglas highlighted the importance of education through much of his account of his literacy trip. Initially, Douglas was angered with the knowledge gained through reading, so culture was regarded as a "curse rather than blessing" (Douglas 35). Douglas had to admit that his master said that his reading was only disappointing. Douglas believes that the only way to liberty is by literacy rate, but at the same time, I feel that overcoming the bondage of slavery restricts to a life not worth living my life so literacy rate I dislike my life as a slave. While he continued his literacy trip, Douglas used his experience to emphasize the paradox of literacy in slavery, but he finally concluded that education is beneficial and necessary for all slaves I believed. Literacy is intolerable, but it is a tool that allows him to organize the abolition of sports.
