August 25 is the national hero anniversary of the Philippines, a national holiday celebrating those who sacrificed the freedom of the Philippines. Among the most famous heroes are Jose Rizal (a nationalist and supporter of the Philippine Reformist advocate during the Spanish colonial period) and Andres Bonifacio (Revolutionary). Others who were recommended to be recognized as state heroes by the National Heroes Committee include Senator Benigno Aquino (though there is a record of violence getting power), Emilio Aginaldo, Gabriella Silan and Apolinario Mabini etc.

Why is Rizal not considered a national hero of the Philippines, what does it mean to first become a Philippine hero? Every hero must be a role model hero in a society symbolizing the good he must fight for our freedom. Rizal is considered a national hero of the Philippines and because of the wonderful things that Rizal has done in our country he strives for freedom through poetry, prose and novels. But there are still a lot of people claiming that he is not our national hero. Others insist that Andres Bonifacio must be our national hero. He fights for our freedom through the confrontation with the Spaniard. In 1901 Governor Howard Taft sponsored and appointed Dr. Jose Rizal as a national hero of the Philippines. Later, the committee sponsored by the United States passed Decree No. 346 which named the anniversary of Rizal's death "Remembrance Day".
