When I Heard the Learned Astronomer

Poems mainly concern science and romance, but it first appeared in the Whitman series called drum tap, written during the Civil War.

The poem that I first chose to write comes from "Michi no Edi". The poem was called when I heard a knowledgeable astronomer. I chose this poem not only because it pulled my attention but also because I really thought that he truly showed that he really loved and cherishes nature. In this poem, I think he is talking about sitting in astronomy classes when he hears astronomy lectures. He said that it might be very interesting for most people to learn mathematical parts of astronomy, but when he hears that, it will make him sick. When I saw this for the first time, I thought why astronomers really made him sick. Then I noticed that he likes nature, and it does not need to be analyzed and revealed. He got sick at the hearing of this lecture. Only when he sees beautiful stars hear their silence when he returns to nature, he will feel calm. Everything he needs to know about nature is beautiful, let him feel peace.
