What Was New Netherland?

In the centuries before the European colonies arrived in North America, the Dutch, called the New Holland Region, was home to many indigenous peoples. The Indians living in Hudson Valley between New Amsterdam (New York City) and Biverwick (Albany, NY) talked about Musee and Mahican in the Eastern Algonquin language. The Mohawk Indians live in the western town of Beverwijck. They are one of five Iroquois countries and they speak Iroquois

Europeans who settled in New Holland came from various countries. Many religious warfare occurred in Europe from the 16th century to the 17th century. These wars caused many people to leave their homes and become refugees. Most countries will not accept these refugees, but the Dutch take different attitudes. They welcome asylum living in their country. Some of these refugees crossed the Atlantic on a boat and chose to settle in New Holland. Therefore, the New Holland colonists are diverse populations. These include German, Scandinavian, French, Scottish, British, Irish, Jewish, Italian, and Croatian. Not all settlers are Dutch, but all live under the rule of the Dutch.

Colonists practiced various religions, most of which belonged to the Netherlands Reformed Church, the only religion approved by the Dutch West India Company Charter. Other settlers are Lutheran, Quaker, Mennonite, Roman Catholic, Jewish, and Puritan. These colonists have freedom of conscience. This means that they are allowed to practice their religious beliefs personally rather than publicly.

What colony is New Holland? How is that position in the Dutch colonial trade empire? How is the relationship between New Holland's Dutch settlers and Native Americans? How did the Dutch contribute to the entry of African slaves into North America and the beginning of slavery as an American institution? During the reign of Queen Elizabeth, England had no colony in the Americas (1558-1603). But the development of British Elizabeth era and the relationship between the UK and Spain colonial times laid the foundation for the establishment of British colonies.

Charles II in the UK turned attention to the Holland colony in New Holland. The acquisition of New Holland's British started with an imperialistic confrontation between the Dutchman and the British. In the English Dutch War in the 1650s and 1660s, these two powers tried to gain commercial advantage in the Atlantic world. During the Second Netherlands - World War II (1664-1667), British troops dominated New Holland's Dutch fur trading center, and in 1664 Charles II got its colony (including today's New Jersey) I handed it to my brother James. Democratic New York (later James II). Colonies and cities were renamed to New York by his name. The Dutchman in New York was injured under British rule. During the Third Dutch War (1672-1674), in 1673, the Dutch regained their colonies, but at the end of the conflict, the British regained control.

In 1664, England took over New Holland's Dutch colony (including its capital city, New Amsterdam) and England was renamed New York. In New Holland, British also dominated the former New Sweden (now Delaware) which the Dutchman had conquered before. It became a part of the state of Pennsylvania later founded in 1680. The British Kingdom acquired the French colonial Arcadia in 1713 and then won the Spanish colony of Canada and Florida in 1763. Later renamed to Quebec, the former France and Canada were divided into two states, including the old Canada lowland Canada (now Quebec) and the newly developed high Canada (the current Ontario).
