What Should I Include in the Project Summary/Abstract?

When writing an NIH Grant Application, please remember that if the application is funded, the project summary / overview will be made publicly available at RePORTER. Please keep the following guidelines in mind.

Abstract / Summary: Many readers lack the time necessary to read the entire project proposal. Therefore it is useful to insert a short project summary, summary, or executive summary. The abstract includes a description of the problem, the purpose of the project, the implementation organization, major project activities, and in some cases the total project budget.
