Students select historical topics related to that topic and conduct extensive primary and secondary research through libraries, archives, museums and historical sites. After analyzing and interpreting the sources, students will draw conclusions about the importance of their subject matter in history before presenting their work to original papers, exhibitions, performances, websites and documentaries. The student program competes in the region, the state, and the national competition in the spring and is evaluated by specialist historians and educators. Students from Oklahoma State will participate in the state finals every May. The program reached a climax at the Kenneth E. Bering National Convention held at the University of Maryland College Park in June.
In addition to discovering past exciting worlds, OkNHD also helps students develop the following attributes that are essential for future success:
The Oklahoma National Historical Day program not only teaches students about history but also encourages them to participate in history.
After choosing a historical topic related to an annual theme, we will do both a primary survey and a secondary survey. After analyzing and explaining your source and concluding the importance of your topic, you will be able to publish your work in one of five ways: paper, exhibition Meeting, performance, documentary or website. In the spring, you can incorporate your work into regional competitions, judged by professional educators and historians. If your work is chosen as one of the best jobs, you will participate in the state NHD competition. As the winner of the state NHD contest you are eligible to participate in the Kenneth E. Bering National History Day Contest held at the University of Maryland College Park in June. This is a conference and competition for the best National History Day project from America, American Samoa, Guam, Asian International School, and European Defense School.
Through the support of many organizations and foundations, the Oklahoma National Historical Anniversary has been realized. You can also support Oklahoma National History Day. For more information, please contact the State Coordinator (sdumas@okhistory.org).
