During the breathing process, trees will release carbon into the atmosphere as they dead and rot, if they burn with forest fires. This dynamic process of absorbing and releasing carbon continues to affect the global carbon budget.

Forests are considered to be "carbon sinks" if they absorb more carbon than they release carbon, and if they release more carbon than they absorb, they are considered "carbon sources". How humans manage forests and use timber will also affect this balance.
