An element consists of only one specific atom. If you want to see the periodic table, each square represents an element. Therefore, sodium (Na) is only sodium. It consists solely of sodium atoms and has special properties related to it. It is the same for all elements in the table. Each element consists of special atoms which are somewhat different from the atoms of all the other elements in the table. Since they are arranged in the Periodic Table of the Elements, atoms with similar chemical properties are adjacent to each other.
However, compound is to prepare completely different substances by combining two or more elements. When sodium (Na) is mixed with chlorine (Cl), it produces sodium chloride (NaCl). Sodium chloride itself behaves differently from sodium and chlorine. For example, chlorine is a gas at room temperature. Sodium is a very soft solid like cream cheese. When they are combined, they form crystals-like substances that we call salt.
Compounds are pure substances, but unlike elements, they are composed of two or more atoms or are composed of different elements. It simply means that the compound consists of two or more elements. A compound may be composed of two different elements, but tends to have a different chemical structure which is totally different from the structure of the elements constituting the compound. Compounds can be broken down into individual elements by many chemical methods / reactions
How is the compound different from the constituent elements? A compound includes an element chemically bonded such that the nature of the compound is different from the nature of the element from which the compound is prepared. The compound always contains a certain proportion of the same element and is related to the interpretation formula of the compound to the compound.
