What is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease that normally protects its health by attacking foreign bodies such as bacteria and viruses, the body's immune system erroneously attacks joints. This causes inflammation, which thickens tissues within the joint (sliding membrane), causing swelling and pain within and around the joint. Fluids generated by the synovium smooth the joints and help them move smoothly

If inflammation is not suppressed, the cartilage may be damaged or cover the resilient tissue at the end of the bone of the joint. Over time, cartilage is lost, and the distance between the joints between the bones is narrowed. The joint may become loose, unstable, painful and may lose mobility. Joint deformation may also occur. Damage to joints can occur early and can not be reversed, doctors recommend early diagnosis and aggressive treatment to manage RA

Rheumatoid arthritis affects the joints of hands, feet, wrists, elbows, knees and ankles in most cases. Coupling effects are usually symmetric. In other words, if one knee or hand is affected, the other will usually be affected. RA is also called systemic disease because it may affect the body system such as cardiovascular system and respiratory system. System means "whole body".
