What happened at IWC ------- "The greatest creature Leviathan grows deeply and seems to be a moving land, like sleeping or swimming like a cape, drawing his skeleton Spit out the ocean in his suitcase "The excess exploitation of Paradise Lost is not limited to land resources. Just as our valuable land and coastal habitats are fragile and easy to destroy, so does the seaside of the open sea. A whale, part of the largest and most powerful mammal on the planet, is insufficient to protect itself from our murder.
Canada left the IWC in 1982, and the only IWC managed species currently harvested by Inuit in Canada is a whale. By the whale restrictions of whales in 2004, whales were murdered every two years from the population of the Hudson Bay - Fox Basin and whales were captured every three years from the Baffin Bay - the Davis Strait. This is about one-fifth of Alaska's whale harvest limit (see below). Most Faroe Islands considers hunting as an important part of their culture and history and discussion on this topic can cause strong emotions. Animal rights groups criticize hunting as cruel, unnecessary and economically less important. Hunter claims that most journalists do not understand the fishing methods used to capture and kill whales.
The third argument to support whaling argues that whaling is necessary for scientific purposes (WWF, 2012). According to IWC, it is important to collect samples from internal organs of whales and conduct scientific research on whales. It clearly shows the state of the world's ocean (IWC, 2010). For example, in recent research high levels of mercury were found in whale organs (Soeder Jon, 2010). The International Whaling Commission suspended the prohibition of commercial whaling, but still supports whale hunting for scientific reasons
On September 13, 2018, members of the International Whaling Commission gathered in Florianopolis, Brazil, where they discussed and dismissed the Japanese proposal to renew commercial whaling. The conclusion of the Florianopolis Declaration is that the purpose of the International Whaling Commission is to protect marine mammals forever and return all whale populations to pre-industrial whaling levels. Non-binding agreements were supported by 40 countries, and 27 countries backed it against voting against it. According to the resolution, some indigenous communities are still allowed to perform restricted hunting.
