West Indianapolis / Harding Street District is one of the oldest communities in the city. The earliest inhabitants arrived in the 1820s, many of them came from Kentucky, Tennessee and South Indiana. Between White River and Great Eagle Creek was located in the south of Conrail, north of Raymond Street, first incorporated in Western Indianapolis in 1882, and had a population of 3,527 in 1890. West Indianapolis became a merging city in 1894 and merged with Indianapolis in 1897. Most of the community's houses were built before 1900. Some areas of this area have been industrialized for more than 100 years. West Indianapolis / Harding Street District is the largest industrial cluster in the city. Prior to 1880 domestic starch and chemical companies and Indianapolis livestock farms were established.

The Sheridan community is in the Northeastern community of Minneapolis. The boundary of the community is defined as the Mississippi River west, the Washington Street north east to the east, the northeast Broadway to the south, and the ninth 17th street to the north. The northern boundary of the community was near the west corner of 18th Street in the northeastern part. At the time of the 2000 census, the community had over 2,700 inhabitants. This began with the 1995 Art-A-Whirl event. Sheridan is currently part of the Minneapolis art district and shares honor with the other three blocks in the northeast Minneapolis.
