When Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto and his 600 soldiers arrived at the mouth of Tampa Bay in 1539, the lives of indigenous peoples have changed forever. In search of money, people of Tokobagan were gradually driven out. DeSoto eventually abandoned this area, headed north east through the state of Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas and then died on the banks of the Mississippi River.
Amid the rapid progress of 300 years, some of the reasons why new settlers arrived are free lands provided by the US government. Did you catch it? These families lived in the area for at least five years and had to agree to build a house. One of the settlers was Josiaa Gates who lived in the east district of Bradenton's 15th Street in 1842.
