This novel was published in 1961 (when it won the National Book Award), it is almost possible to predict the type of existential crisis spread in the beginning of the century. The crisis of existence is related to the meaning found in places and times, and in our time it is the driving force of "keeping it strange" and the rising of our love for that place. Binx is not looking for God, but to better understand what makes his life meaningful.
