VMI cadets fight in Battle of New Market

On the day of 1864, a student at the Virginia Military Research Institute (VMI) in Lexington participated in a New Market Battle in Virginia as part of the 1864 Spring multilateral attack designed to release Virginia from war. At the center of this movement is the spectacular struggle around Ulysses Grant and Robert Lee around Richmond.

Federal General Franz Siegel was sent to pressure the important agricultural land, Shenandoah Valley. He marched in early May to neutralize the valley in the south of Winchester, which was always a threat to the north. It was this crucial moment when Breckenridge hesitated and made VMI trainees fight. These young students participated in the attack and caught two Yankees. Nine trainees were killed and 48 people were injured, but Sigel experienced humiliating defeat and began to withdraw from the valley.

The courage of the VMI students in the new market campaign became legendary and there was no pressure on the rebel groups in the Shenandoah Valley. Breckenridge was able to send some of his troops to the East to strengthen Lee.

On May 15, 1864, cadet candidate VMI Corps fought as troops in the battle of the new market in Virginia. These cadets are numbered 257 and consist of 4 infantry regiments and 1 artillery regiment. Ten students were killed in battle or later died of injuries; 45 people were injured. The youngest participant is 15 years old, the oldest participant is 25 years old. On May 10, 1864, the Cadet Candidate VMI Corps was ordered to join the General Confederate General of John C. Breckenridge near Stutton, Virginia. After about 85 miles north, the army arrived in the new market on Sunday morning, May 15, 1864. The allied army of General Franz Ziegel in Bushill aimed at the federal army with a cannon and a muskete gun and made a gap in the road. It is worth noting that trainees filled this gap and made it possible for the Federal Army to reorganize the Allied forces.
