Ventura County Climate Action Plan

The sea level continues to rise since 1880 and steadily increasing every year as shown in Figure 1 provided by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Worldwide, the sea level has increased by 10 - 25 cm (3.9 - 8 inches) in the last century (Hopkinson et al.). Sea level rise is most prominent on the east coast and the west coast. On the east coast, the sea level rose 6 inches to 8 inches or more. According to the US climate index announced by the US Environmental Protection Agency, especially in Southern California, the sea level rises from 0.01 inches up to 2 inches on the west coast.

Miami Dade has two programs to build climate change measures and extreme weather resistance. Miami Dade Green Print and South Florida Climate Change Compact. Although these are powerful plans, they lack accountability and have made little progress unless there is a calendar. South Florida Climate Leadership Conference - scheduled for October 5 at West Palm Beach, Florida, but ironically also canceled due to Hurricane Mathew - stakeholders discussing the latest science and new ways to renew their contract next year Collective progress was made before. Whether or not leaders will gather to continue to improve the ability to endure the harsh weather in the region is unknown.

This is not a precedent. In the United States, at least 16 municipalities recognize an important role of reducing consumption of meat and dairy products against climate change in the climate action plan. For example, the Portland Climate Action Plan in Portland, Oregon promises institutional purchases of healthy and climate friendly food at public meetings, events, and government facilities. The climate action plan of Santa Monica, California mandates municipalities to reduce purchasing of meat and dairy products by 15% and encourages them to participate in large-scale institutions. Ohio's Cincinnati climate action plan admits, "If 10% of Cincinnati has less meat to eat in a week, carbon dioxide emissions will be reduced by 75,000 tons per year."

Portland's climate action plan is to reduce carbon emissions in Portland and Martonoma County by 40% by 2030 and by 80% by 2050 (relative to 1990). This program is based on the future climate protection efforts that lead to the reduction of local carbon emissions and per capita emissions. Climate Action Plan identifies 2030 targets and recent carbon reduction initiatives in various areas related to urban system planning, such as energy, land use, transportation and natural systems. The focus of the climate change strategy strategy is to understand how the climate affects today's communities and how these influences change in the next century.
