Using Semicolons

If you need a stronger style tag than a comma, you can use a semicolon to tie closely related ideas. By effectively using the semicolon, you can make your sentences more complicated.

Semicolons are most commonly used to link (in sentences) two independent phrases closely related to thinking.

Combining two or more ideas (parts) in a sentence with a semicolon gives those ideas the same position or level.

Use a semicolon between two separate phrases connected by a connection adverb or transition phrase

But they choose to write, and people can make their own decisions; as a result, many people swear by their writing method.

Basically there are two ways of writing. It is a cheap, easy-to-use pen or pencil method, and a method using a computer and a printer.

If the terms are separated by commas or if the terms are detailed, please use a semicolon between the independent phrases connected by the reconciled connection.

What happened here? Since these three list items are separated by commas, it is not clear what they are.

Correct: Dairy cows have been decreasing for thousands of years, but it is still one of the greatest species on the earth; when we humans pass, they are domesticated and proud.

What happened here? It is not clear at the end of the first independent clause and the beginning of the second independent clause.

As you can see, I used a semicolon. You can use a semicolon (yay) if you are writing the second sentence and the second sentence is related to the first sentence. If you want to use more semicolon examples, Harry Potter is a good starting point; I learned all the semicolon skills from these books. (I just used another semicolon, I did not understand it.) Now these are the only two examples you can use a semicolon. You can not use them as regular old commas, or simply want to look complicated (you may look stupid with misuse of them). The semicolon is another way to enrich English, but too much will ruin it.
