US Mass Shootings, 1982-2018: Data From Mother Jones’ Investigation

The bottom map records each large shot taken in the USA since 1982. We mapped the location and number of these shots using the data collected by Jones' mothers. "Popular shooting" means that more than four people (excluding shooting games) were killed in a single attack in public places. This is a more conservative number - the data does not include shooting incidents in case of a traditional crime such as armed theft or violent violence

Jones's mother defined collective shooting as a case of solitary gunman killing at least four people in a public place to eliminate motivation not including violence or robbery.
