Mother Ann Lee and Early Shaker: Shaker 's charismatic leader Anne Lee was born in 1736, the daughter of a blacksmith in Manchester, England. Growing up to illiterate, the shaker believes traditionally that Ann married a 1762 blacksmith called Abraham Stein Dam (aka Stanley and Stanley). The couple had four children, and they all died as a child. At the age of 22 Anne joined Shaker, and after becoming a member for about 12 years, I experienced what Evans called "a special manifestation of God's light". After this experience, a small society of believers acknowledged that she was "the mother of Christ" and that Ann's mother became the leader of the vibrator.
