University versus Vocational Education

After 9 years of Educación Escolar Básica (elementary school), students can go to either BachilleratoTécnico (vocational school) or BachilleratoCientífico (high school). Both types of secondary education are in three years, usually on the same campus Colegio.

Higher vocational education and training is also conducted at non-university levels. This type of education is a combination of practical skills and education of theoretical expertise. Higher education differs from other forms of higher education, such as those provided by vocational educational institutions, often referred to as vocational schools. Higher vocational education contrasts with broader scientific education, which may focus on theoretical and abstract conceptual knowledge.
