The 117th Governor of South Carolina State, Henry McMaster is the son of a former national delegate. Governor McMaster was the first American lawyer appointed by President Ronald Reagan and unanimously approved by the US Senate. He served as Deputy Governor for two years, Attorney General for eight years, and US Attorney General for four years. From 1993 to 2002 McMaster served as Republican chairman of the Republic of South Carolina and made Republican Congressman and Senate Republican Party the Republican Party.

Columbia's South Carolina University is a public, collaborative research college of flagship, with seven satellite campuses. The University of South Carolina and its first campus, The Horseshoe, was founded in 1801 and designated as a national historical registered good. The university's main campus covers more than 359 acres (1.5 square kilometers) and is located in the city center within 1 block from the South Carolina State Capitol.
