Understanding Animal Behavior Can Be Crucial to Conservation Managers

Introduction Understanding the behavior of animals can provide information to wildlife and protection managers to manage biodiversity. Conservation behavior is a relatively new interdisciplinary field that uses animal behavior to help address wildlife conservation issues. Biologists use theoretical and methodological information in various fields of biology, ecology and animal behavior to try to enrich and protect biodiversity. The role of this new discipline in promoting real protection issues is often controversial and some scientists believe that the importance of animal behavior in conservation activities will be emphasized.

Although the fields of animal behavior and conservation biology are conceptually intertwined, there is no unified framework for this interdisciplinary field. The idea of ​​incorporating behavioral management into conservation management has existed for at least 35 years (Geist and Walther 1974; Harcourt 1999). However, over the past decade, we have investigated and emphasized the relevance between behavioral science and conservation and highlighted the important role of animal behavior in conservation activities (eg Clemmons and Buchholz 1997; Sutherland 1998; Linklater 2004; Blumstein ).
