Randall Jarrell was born on May 6, 1914 from Owen and Anna Jarrell in Nashville, Tennessee. He spent a part of his childhood in California, but from 1927 to 1931 he returned to Nashville, where he concentrated in Humefolk High School specializing in tennis, drama and journalism. After that I studied at Vanderbilt University in 1932 and graduated from Phi Beta Kappa in 1935. His first published poem appeared in "American Review" in 1934. Jarrell teaches at many universities including Princeton University and the University of Texas. So he met his future wife, Mackie Langham.
