Uncertain Future for Polar Bears

Polar bears have thick body fat and a waterproof coating to protect them from cold air and water of the habitat.

The large Arctic Ocean ice in the Arctic Ocean shrinks every summer, but in September 2012 the sea ice became the smallest. Changes in the Arctic environment will affect communities and species, especially those that depend on ice, such as polar bears. Rhys Gerholdt of the World Health Foundation visited the frozen Arctic Circle, saw polar bears and thought about future challenges in this rapidly changing climate.

My story begins in the Arctic Circle. I took a van with Caterpillar tracks through the tundra in northern Canada 40 miles from Churchill.

After 2 hours of driving, I arrived at the destination Arctic wilderness. While wrapped in a huge court and walking in a cold wind I went out with a colleague Peter Ewins, a WWF Arctic wildlife scientist.

Since the mother of the polar bear is not 100 meters away, a turnip of 10 weeks old alternates between hitting the neck and hitting the ball against a barren branch, so I can not rest. I am surprised how gently and patiently this gigantic animal can withstand the drag and bite of turnip. Polar bear mothers are grand and magnificent, and her influence on her descendants is wonderful.

However, I am not only experiencing this kind of miracle in the Arctic; I am here because my polar bear's plight is not certain. Researchers said that by 2035 - when the baby grew up completely - the polar bear could not survive without sea ice close to Churchill

The polar bear lifestyle is closely related to sea ice. Most importantly, ice provides a platform that can capture seals and those thick layers of fat provide energy for survival.

Higher temperatures caused by climate change later resulted in the formation of sea ice and melted faster than ever. This forces the polar bears to land before they can build up enough weight to stay healthy in the months to return to sea ice.

Scientists discovered that mothers are malnourished and that the number of litter boxes of polar bears is gradually decreasing as they can not expire their children to maturity or grow like infants. Historically, triplets and twins usually emerge from the obstetric nest, but now twin and singles (like my former Cubs) are now standard.

WWF is aware of the urgent need to help polar bears. We will monitor their population, study ice, and work with indigenous communities to gather traditional knowledge that may help bears. It is a tough battle, but we are making efforts to make species like this polar bear and puppy live in the future.

In short, there are several populations of polar bears with little knowledge of scientists, the total number of polar bears in the world remains uncertain. However, compared with 20 years ago or 30 years ago, the trend of data demographic trends shows a decrease in the number of species. Scientists are well aware that polar bears face serious threats to survival in the coming decades after fully understanding the impact of polar bear habitat and warming on breeding.

Let's talk about polar bears. The health and quantity of the 19 Polar Bear populations of the Arctic Circle are very good, over several decades *. Mitch Taylor, who has been studying polar bears for more than 30 years, says the population has increased and is very resilient. At least 600 Polar bears per year are shot and killed by hunters and eaten - did your favorite news source say to you? The Arctic Ocean ice grows and shrinks every 6 months. It is about the same size as the mainland of the United States. As the Earth warms, the overall trend of ice continues to decline every year; all animals living there have dealt with this century's fluctuations. International catch and seal hunting quota are related to the number of polar bears rather than temperature

Polar bears live on cold Arctic glaciers and sea ice. When sea ice forms the ocean during the cold season, in addition to pregnant women, many polar bears go to ice and go hunting seals. Polar bears mainly eat seals. Polar bears sometimes lie quietly in the frozen breathing holes and wait for the sealing to water to surface. Polar bears can also hunt under the ice while swimming. However, climate change makes it harder to kill polar bears. Ice melts faster and reforms than before. Without sea ice, polar bears must clean up other nutritious foods.
