Unattended Children

The Seattle Public Library welcomes children to use the library. The library is a public building and its staff is receiving public library services. Staff can help the children access the library materials and services

The library wants to provide a safe and appropriate environment for visitors of all ages. For child safety and comfort, a responsible parent or caregiver should accompany and supervise the use of children in the library. In the library, parents and carers are in charge of monitoring and coordinating the behavior of children. Libraries have neither tools nor library functions and can not provide long-term or short-term parenting services.

Library staff will refer to this policy as necessary.

Unattended children are considered to endanger themselves, or others in the library pose a threat to unattended children

After evaluating the situation, the library staff will contact the parents or guardians of the uninhabited children. If the parent or guardian can not be contacted, the child will be under the control of the Seattle police station.

C. Uninhabited children under the age of 8 are treated as unaccompanied children. Unattended destructive children over 8 years old are dealt with under Policy No. 310 - "General Code of Conduct" and are required to leave the building or that the police are responsible for unattended children You may be required.

A: "Uninhabited child" is a child of any age that apparently does not have parents, guardians, and / or responsible caregivers. Children with unsafe care and happiness can be regarded as unattended children, considering age, maturity, developmental level. D. If an unattended child is acting in a disruptive manner, the child may be warned according to the policy of the Code of Conduct and may ask to leave the library if destructive behavior continues.

Unattended children: It is illegal to leave children (under 6) unattended if the child is in danger or the engine is operating and the key is in the ignition.
