Typographica: The Medium and the Medievel-to-Modern Transformation

Over the past four years I have been asked to write a Typographica Favorite Fontfaces column. In this year's version, I slowed the subject a bit. I left a list of selectable subpar versions and decided to follow another route: I chose a popular font instead of choosing a good one. The only problem is that I am at the top of the bestseller list, but my selection is really bad. The font I chose was an extension of Jakob Runge's Cera series (especially Cera Round Pro and Cera Brush released in 2016). I wrote a somewhat sarcastic comment under the "scoring" scorpion and submitted it to Stephen Coles, an editor of Typographica. I did not reveal my secret, but the editorial team waited for comment.

The day when Typographica announces a font review once a year is one of my favorite days. Creating fonts requires years of experience and experience, but for type designers themselves, there is little new version of thoughtful analysis. When I went to study font creation, I was always disappointed that I could not find anything other than to explain the single paragraph it was in. So, after years of frustration, when I was having some of my most admired designers this year I will set up a website that will make this community available to the design community I decided. Font review journal is my attempt to analyze and celebrate my favorite fonts, old fonts and new fonts.

When using contemporary fonts such as SF, Proxima Nova, Museo, there are several thickness options such as Thin, Ultralight, Medium, Semiibold, Bold, Heavy, Regular etc. Font size and thickness complement each other. Remember, it's convenient to use standard weight at 11-19 pt, medium using 20-34 pt and bold using 34 pt or more. If the font size is very large, you can also use variants of Light and Ultralight. These weights keep large fonts easier to see, but do not forget that big titles on iOS 11 are usually in bold.
