The first democraticized country in modern history was the Corsica Republic in 1755. But it was short lived and the first modern country that established official democracy was France, which established universal male voting rights in 1848. The United States did not mention their new country as democracy, but they also supported the principle of national freedom and equality. When Congress passed the "Voting Rights Act" in the 1960s, all men in the US had the right to vote nominally. Democracy was a popular government system after the First World War, but the Depression brought dictatorship in most parts of Europe and Asia.
