The life of Torquato Tasso (1544 - 1595) can only be called misfortune. Born in Sorrento on March 11, Bernardo Tasso himself is a respected poet and is a member of a very small aristocrat who can benefit from the education of his station. Until 1560 he studied at the court of the Duke of Urbino, Guibaldo II delle Rovere, and he left for studying law and philosophy at the University of Padova. Around this time, Tasso wrote his first major romantic poem, Rinaldo, about the story of Charlemagne.

Goethe's drama Torquato Tasso on the poet and his supporters reminds me of this lost relationship. During the play, Tasso tells how he patterned his poem after his patronage, which is reminiscent of the word "pattern" derived from the word "sponsor".
