Hydrodealkylation or hydrodealkylation (HDA) of toluene is a process for the preparation of benzene. The reaction is as follows: Toluene + H 2 benzene + CH 4 This method requires toluene and hydrogen as the main reactor. Next, toluene and hydrogen are converted in a catalyst packed reactor to produce benzene and methane. The reaction is exothermic and is operated at pressures between 500 ° C. and 660 ° C. and between 20 and 60 bar. The process begins with mixing fresh toluene with a stream of unreacted toluene and mixing in a storage tank.
Using toluene, the team identified two enzymes, PhdA and PhdB. These two enzymes were found in Tolumonas auensis among all the samples producing toluene. PhdB is actually a bacterial enzyme that catalyzes or initiates the process of producing chemical toluene. PhdA activates PhdB. Later, the team reconstructed the situation in their laboratory, confirmed that the bacteria started biosynthesis, and confirmed their doubt. So, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory team can solve the 30-year mystery as to how bacteria produce toluene, but what does this mean for the public? As the team incorporates it into research papers, it may result in a new renewable energy source.
Like many people, Daniels is excited about the prospect of using toluene as a fuel. If researchers can utilize biosynthesis processes and mass production, the world may replace ethanol, which requires much pursuit. Once the chemical is further refined, it can be used alone as an energy source. "Algenol aims to produce a variety of useful products using algae, which is a cheap and environmentally-friendly renewable resource, at Algenol," Simkonis says. "Since this may be the latest renewable resource, we can see many new toluene products come out with this discovery."
Imagine that all future energy sources are being driven by chemicals that are completely produced by bacteria and chemical processes. This means that it no longer burns coal, fossil fuels, or other nonrenewable resources. The ability to synthesize large amounts of toluene means to find the most powerful renewable resource in the world to date.
