Thin layer chromatography (TLC) is a quick alternative to more complicated chromatographic methods. TLC can be used to analyze inks and dyes by extracting individual components. Products of each company are slightly different and can be confirmed by TLC, so it can be used to investigate memos and fibers remaining on the site. The only limiting factor in TLC analysis is that the components must be soluble in any solution used to carry the components to the assay plate. This solution is called mobile phase. Forensic scientists can compare unknowns with known standards by examining the distance traveled by each component. This distance is called the retention rate (Rf) of each extracted component when compared with the starting point. If each Rf value matches a known sample, it indicates an unknown identity
