As the grade approaches the end, we will have the opportunity to interview Samantha Zwerling about her service experience as Maryland University Student Union Government Federation Chairperson for the past two years. How did you get involved with the UMD Student Government? When I was in college, I was looking for a group of environmental students to participate, so I was involved in MaryPIRG. As MaryPIRG's funds depend heavily on the relationship with SGA, I began attending all SGA conferences. I became the chairman of MaryPIRG 's club at the end of the second grade and continued working with SGA. At the end of that year, I decided to run for president, thinking that there is a possibility that it will have a big influence on SGA. What is the greatest achievement during my tenure as SGA President?
We organized a campaign to encourage school management to provide more money to the mental health service. It produced an additional $ 5 million in 10 years.
I asked the city council of College Park to reduce the city council and mayor's age to 18 (the city council was 21 years old, the mayor was 26 years old).
At the Maryland conference, we announced a bill to protect interns from sexual harassment and other kinds of discrimination.
What is the biggest challenge you face when trying to achieve your goals? Hiring is always difficult. No matter how kindly you are, you should be kind and motivated. In that respect, it is difficult to delegate. I did not know how much commissioning was necessary until it was too late. What did you learn from the presidential experience? I learned a lot about the importance of interpersonal relationships. I can establish relationships with state representatives about issues such as equality of marriage. These relationships are important when the university needs lobbying for a budget. I have established relationships of trust with administrators, but I did a lot of work on very important issues. It is important to show you that you care about working with them and that you understand what each person's goal is. Based on your experience, what is the most important role and responsibility of effective student government? What is the obstacle that the student government makes it difficult to achieve these goals? It is important to actually get feedback and communicate with the students you represent. It is easy to stay at the office of SGA and talk with government members of other students, but it is important that students know what they have done. This gives you more legitimacy. This is extremely difficult as it requires a lot of effort and time. What advice would you give to the new elected president government president who just started his term of office?
Write handwritten notes to people you meet. This may seem obsurd, but I am writing a note and I am very enthusiastic to get lots of positive feedback. People will remember you are the one who sent the memo by email.
Please confirm that the organization is in touch outside the office. Set some dinner or kick the game - what people can understand each other
One of the highest positions a college student can have in a community is the chairman of the student union government association (SGA) or the president of the student council. At the Morehouse College, who is the president of SGA, we need to be responsible not only for a lot of responsibility but also for hard shoes. At this famous university there are many great people who are the heads of famous and influential student groups nationally and globally. "I know that I am suitable only for the number of the other 86 presidents ... a man is an honor," Kamren Rollins said he is now the SGA president of the Morehouse University. This was not the first time for Rawlins to attend a student union, last year he served as Chief of Morehouse SGA.
My name is Jessica Zambrotta. I am SGA Vice Chairman in the 2011 academic year. I was fortunate to be a member of SGA as I was a first year college student, including senators of degree, secretary secretaries, and many committee members, so I was very embarrassed in this position I believe it will work. Through these leadership roles, I began learning ways to make the most impact on the MMC community. In addition I am participating in the emerging leader program which is an important tool for effective leaders. I am determined to keep the mission of SGA and to ensure that we provide accurate voice to students. I also promise to promote more transparent communication between MMC students and faculty and staff to achieve dialogue and positive results.
