Theme of Haunting in the Following Modernist Works: Rebecca, A Haunted House and The Painted Veil

The emergence of modernism as a new genre is a response to previous realism and occupies its position in literary classics. As introduced to the literary circles in the face of the cruel facts of life and its chaotic reality, it brings different aspects to the writer's world. The difference is both content and formal. The genre of modernism brings a new dimension to literature through a non-traditional and rare new technique. In the field of art and literature, modernism caused a shift in aesthetic and cultural emotions during the post World War I era.

The play "Mostellaria" by Rome playwright Plaus was the first to feature a haunted house sometimes translated as The Haunted House. Another early description of the ghost place came from the description of Pliny the Younger (50 AD). Pliny explained that the house of Athens had been suffering from ghosts. Includes many ghost stories including regular gin (also spelled djinn), ghouls and dead bodies called one thousand nights one night, sometimes one thousand nights one night. The legend about the haunted house has long appeared in literature. The first surviving report of a haunted house reached Lucias Sura, his patron who explained about the haunted house in Athens from the letter written by Pliny the Younger (61-c. 112). No one lived in this house until the philosopher Athenedros (74 BC - 7 AD) arrived in the city. He was tempted by low rent and moved, as it was not affected by the reputation of the house. An old man tied to a chain of iron, Ghost appeared in the nudeus of Athens on the first night and waved to the philosopher. When arriving at the courtyard, the phantom disappeared and Athenedoras cautiously marked the place. The next morning he asked the magistrate to delve into the place where he found the skeleton of the old man tied in a chain. After the skeleton was given an appropriate burial, ghosts never show up again.
