O Riada, born on 1 August 1931 in Cork, Ireland, was born in John Reidy. As he became more and more enthusiastic about Irish culture in the 1950s he used that name in the first part of his life and switched to his Irish name brand, Sean O Riada. The family lived in Limerick County rich in music for a while and he both studied traditional songs from his parents who played the violin. "My father has a wonderful music shop," O Riada said in an interview quoted on the RamblingHouse website. "I remember saying to him that he walked 7 miles, did a day's work and learn songs."
