Storming Heaven is the second award winning novel by Dennis Giardina published in 1987. This historical novel is a fictional story of a painful labor dispute that occurred in the southern West Virginia in the early 1920s, also known as the West Virginia State Coal War. The authors tell the story of a real confrontation that miners face through the eyes of four protagonists from different industries with different views. This story tells the real difficulties faced by coal miners, and the subsequent conflict is the subject covered by the "American journey".

The event "Matewan Massacre" was recorded in John Sayles' movie "Matewan". Violence in West Virginia continued for several years; this was the continuation of the initial struggle highlighted by Homestead and Haymarket events. Despite the best efforts of labor organizations and progressive leaders, the war between capital and labor has continued to increase since the 1930s.
