William James was born in New York in 1842. He is the oldest among the five children of theologian Henry James, and is a brother of novelist Henry James. He is happy after married and has five children. James started his career as a student in art, but he was immediately interested in science. He entered Harvard Medical School in 1863 and graduated Doctor of Medicine (MD) six years later. His education was interrupted by illness and depression, and he was able to overcome it only by the so-called "Prometheus will's actions". James was appointed lecturer of anatomy and physiology at Harvard University, later became an associate professor of philosophy and eventually became full time professor of philosophy and psychology.

He studied in Geneva, London and Paris during his adolesn to spend his early days in America and gain his precious world experience of his father. He lived in Newport, went to Harvard Law School for a while and began to provide criticism and stories to the magazine in 1864. In 1869, then from 1872 to 1874, he visited Europe and began his first novel, Roderick Hudson. At the end of 1875, he settled in Paris where he met Turgenev, Flaubert and Zola, and wrote "Americans" (1877). In December 1876 he moved to London, two years later he and Daisy Miller got an international reputation.
