The Story of the Pineapple

Dole and Delmont began planting pineapple on Oahu in 1901 and 1917 respectively. Dole's Pineapple Company acquired 60 acres (24 hectares) of land in 1901 and developed into a large company Dole Foods. Maui Pineapple Company began planting pineapple in Maui in 1909

John Kidwell noticed that the Hawaiian islands have the perfect pineapple environment and by 1900 large-scale farms are produced. Thirty years later, Doll and Delmont manufacture canned fresh pineapple and ship to major cities throughout the country. The pineapple business slowed down during the Second World War, but it was picking up from the late 1950s to the early 1960s.

Doll stopped the canning business in Honolulu in 1991. In 2008, Delmont completed pineapple growth business in Hawaii. The Maui Pineapple Company will reduce the supply of pineapple locally on Maui Island only in 2009 and by 2013 only the doll plantations on Oahu planted pineapple. In commercial planting, flowering can be induced artificially, early harvesting of major fruits can promote the development of a second batch of smaller fruits.
