SOM is a heterogeneous mixture ranging from fresh plant residues to decomposition stages of highly degraded substances called humus. SOM is made from carbon-rich organic compounds. Soil organic carbon (SOC) level is directly related to soil organic matter content, SOC is usually a measure of organic matter in soil.
