The Stanford Prison Experiment

The Stanford Prison Experiment is a study of the psychological impact of being a prisoner or a prison guard. The experiment was conducted by the researcher group led by Philip Zimbardo, Professor of Psychology at Stanford University from 14th to 20th August 1971. It was funded by the funds provided by the US Naval Research Bureau and the US Navy and the Marines were interested in determining the cause of conflict between military guards and prisoners.

24 students from 75 people, plays a prisoner in the basement of the Stanford University psychology building, was chosen to live in a simulated prison. Roles are randomly assigned. Participants, even beyond Zimbabwe's own expectations, adapted to his role, showed authoritarian measures, and ultimately led the "officers" to torture some prisoners. As a result, many prisoners develop passive attitudes, accept physical abuse, and at the request of security guards it is easy to punish other prisoners trying to kill prisoners. The experiment also affected Zimbabwe himself, he ignored his role as a psychologist as a "jail supervisor" and allowed him to continue abusing as if it were a real prison. The five prisoners were very dissatisfied with the process and withdrew from the experiment beforehand, but the whole experiment abruptly stopped just six days later. Experimental results are said to support attribution of contextual behavior rather than trend attribution. In other words, it seems that the situation leads to the participant's behavior and not inherent in the character of the individual. In this way, it has the results compatible with the famous Milgram experiment. There, an average person accomplishes command, and it seemingly hurts a dangerous electric shock to the experimenter's allies.
